Friday October 12, the Colonia football team took home the win against New Brunswick with a score of 42 to 21. It was a close game the first half, however Colonia started running off with the lead by the second.
The first quarter of the game both teams showed off their impressive skills. However, neither where able to take the lead and score the first touchdown. Colonia High School running-back and linebacker Matt Croteau scored the first touchdown for six yards.”I was in the moment when I scored that first touchdown,”Croteau stated, “I wanted to celebrate with my team for getting on board.” With a failed kick Colonia was in the lead 6-0 at the end of the first.
When the second quarter came along, Colonia was eager to keep their lead going. Quarterback Eric Moreno-Hamilton scored an 11 yard touchdown for Colonia increasing their lead to 12-0. However, New Brunswick Nadir Harmon throws a 60 yard pass to Dahvey Hicks allowing New Brunswick to get on the board. With a failed kick by New Brunswick the score was now 12-6. Then, Moreno-Hamilton throws a pick six to Harmon allowing New Brunswick to score a touchdown. “I was really upset that they intercepted,” Moreno-Hamilton said, “However I had to forget about that really fast and keep playing.
Colonia did not let those two touchdowns set them back because Moreno-Hamilton ran for 19 yards for a touchdown. Moreno Hamilton then stated, “I was really happy to get into the end-zone and take pressure of the defense.” Soon after that touchdown Croteau ran into the end-zone to take back the lead. The score at halftime was 28-14.
After Half-Time
Going into the third quarter, Colonia, knew they had to stay focus so they can keep their lead going. Once again Croteau was able to score a touchdown and Jose Ribierio was able to get the extra point. “I was feeling good about myself,” Croteau stated about his third touchdown, “I worked so hard to get here and it’s good to see it pay off.” The Patriots now extending their lead making them one step closer to winning.
Colonia had a lot more breathing room for the last quarter. They were able to try out new plays and do other things they never could do in a game before. Justice Harris scored a 47 run touchdown and Ribierio had a successful kick. New Brunswick also scored a touchdown but it wasn’t enough to beat the Patriots. The final score of the game was 42-21.
“It was a great team win,” Croteau said, “I’m proud of how the team and I performed. Go Patriots.”
